A View Toward M106

Image
A View Toward M106 Big, bright beautiful spiral Messier 106 dominates this cosmic vista. The two degree wide telescopic field of view looks toward the well-trained constellation Canes Venatici, near the handle of Big Dipper. Also known as NGC  4258, M106 is about 80,000 light-years across and 23.5 million light-year away, the largest member of the Canes II galaxy group. For a far away galaxy, the distance to M106 is well-known in part because it can be directly measured by tracking this galaxy’s remarkable maser, or microwave laser emission is produced by water molecules in molecular clouds orbiting its active galactic nucleaus. Another prominent spiral galaxy on the scene, viewed nearly edge-on, in NGC 4217 below and right of M106. The distance to NGC 4217 is much less well-known, estimated to  be about 60 million light-years. ``

blob fish

Image
The blob fish is a deep sea fish of the Psychroulutidae. It inhabits the deep waters off the coasts mainland Australia and Tasmania, as well as the waters of New Zealand. Blob fish are typically shorter than 30 cm. They live at depths between 600 and 12,00 m where the pressure is several dozen times higher than at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient for maintaining buoyancy. Instead, the flesh of the blob fish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming. Its relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as it primarily swallows edible matter that floats in fronts in front of it such as deep-ocean crustaceans. Blob fish are often caught as bycatch in bottom trawling nets. Scientists now fear the blob fish could become as endangered species because of deep-ocean trawling.

Snowy Owl

Image
When you see a snowy owl, it’s clear how the bird probably got its name: they’re snow-white. Common name is Snowy owl and the scientific name is Bubo scandiaca. Almost, snowy owl life span is 9 years.  Males are generally whiter than females. As males grow older, they get whiter. The females never become completely white—remaining brownish with darker markings. Snowy owls have excellent eyesight, but they obviously can’t see their prey when it’s underneath snow or a thick layer of plants. To capture those meals, the owl relies on its other keen sense: hearing. These large owls mainly live in the Arctic in open, treeless areas called tundra. Snowy owls perch on the ground or on short posts. From there they patiently watch for prey. Their favorite target is lemmings – small mouse like rodents –but they also hunt for other small rodents, rabbits, birds, and fish. In flight, snowy owls generally cruise low to the ground. Once they spot their prey, they approach it from the

A Total Eclipse at the End of the World

Image
A Total Eclipse at the End of the World Would you go to end of the world to see a total eclipse of the Sun? If you did, would you be surprised to find someone else there already? In 2003,the Sun, the moon, Antarctica , and two photographers all lined up in Antarctic during and unusual total solar eclipse. Even given the extreme location, a group of enthusiastic eclipse chasers ventured near the bottom of the world to experience the surreal momentary disappearance of the Sun behind the Moon. One of the treasures collected was the featured picture – a composite of four separate images digitally combined to realistically simulate how the adaptive human eye saw the eclipse. As the image was taken, both the Moon and the Sun peeked together over an Antarctic ridge. In the sudden darkness, the magnificent corona of the Sun became visible around the Moon. Quite by accident, another photographer was caught in one of the images checking his video camera. Visible to his left are an

A Sagittarius Triplet

Image
A Sagittarius Triplet These Three bright nebulae are often featured o telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius and the crowded star fields of the central Milky Way . In fact, 18 th century cosmic tourist Charles Messer cataloged two of them; M8, the large nebula above and left of center, and colorful M20 near the bottom of the frame. The third emission region includes NGC 6559 , right of M8 and separated from the larger nebula by a dark dust lane. All three are stellar nurseries about five thousand light –years or so distant. Over a hundred light-years across the expansive M8 is also known as the lagoon Nebula. M20’s popular moniker is the Trepid. Glowing hydrogen gas creates the dominant red color of the emission nebulae. In striking contrast, blue hues in the Trifid are due to dust reflected starlight. The colorful composite skyscape was recorded with two different telescopes to capture a wide field image of the area and individual close-ups at higher resolutio

À Hybrid solar Eclipse over Kenya

Image
Chasing solar eclipse can cause you to the most interesting places and meet the most interesting people. Almost, For example,  chasing this eclipse brought this astrophotographer to  Kenya in 2013. His contact, member of the Maasai people, was to pick him up at the airport, show him part southern Kenya, and ever agreed to pose in traditional warrior garb on a hill as the hopefully spectacular eclipse set far in background. Unfortunately, this contact person died unexpectedly a week before

Butterfly fish

Image
Butterfly fish is a generally small sized species of marine fish, found in tropical and subtropical waters, primarily around coral reefs. The butterfly fish is well known for its brightly colored body and elaborate markings. There are more than 100 different species of butterfly fish found distributed throughout the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans, meaning that the butterfly fish is a salt-water species of (marine) fish. The average butterfly fish is fairly small and generally grows to around 4 or 5 inches in length. Some species of the butterfly fish however, are known to grow to 8 inches (20 cm) long and some butterfly fish individuals have been known to grow to 30 cm in length. Common Name        Butterfly fish Scientific Name        Chaetodontidae Found                        Atlantic, Indian, Pacific Oceans Life Span                    6 – 12 years Size                            7 cm – 15 cm Color                         Black, White Yellow, Orange, Silv

Star Cluster, Spiral Galaxy, Supernova

Image
Star Cluster, Spiral Galaxy, Supernova  A cosmic snapshot from May 19 , this colorful telescopic field of view spans about 1 degree or 2 full moons on the sky. Spiky in appearance, foreground Milky Way stars are scattered toward the royal constellation Cepheus while stars of open Cluster NGC 6939 gather about 5 thousand light years in the distance near the top of the frame. Face-on Spiral galaxy NGC 6946 is toward the lower left nearly 22 million light-years away. The helpful red lines identify recently discovered Supernova SN 2017eaw , the death explosion of a massive star nestled in the galaxy’s bluish spiral arms . In fact in the last 100 years, 10 supernovae have been discovered in NGC 6946 .By comparison, the average rate of supernovae in our Milky Way is about 1 every 100 years or so. Of course, NGC 6946 is also known as The Fireworks Galaxy.

Spiral Galaxy NGC 7644

Image
Big, beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 7644 in nearly 175,000 light-years across, larger than our own Milky Way. It lies some 30 million light-years distant in the southern constellation Pavo appearing as a faint, extended object in small telescopes. We see the disk of the nearby island universe tilted towards our line of sight. This remarkably distinct and detailed galaxy portrait covers an area about the angular size of the full moon. In it, the giant galaxy’s yellowish core is dominated by the light from old, cool stars. Beyond the core, spiral arms filled with young blue star clusters and pinkish star forming regions sweep past a smaller satellite galaxy at the lower left, reminiscent of the Milky Way’s satellite galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Stone Spheres

Image
The Stone Spheres of Costa Rica are a collection of over 300 almost perfect spherical orbs first discovery in the Diquis Delta in the 1930’s . They vary in size from a few centimeter to several meters, the larger stones weigh nearly 16 tonnes.  Most are sculpted form granodiorite, an igneous rock similar to granite. They are believed to have been created between 200 BC and 1600 BC. The stones are often grouped together in geometrical patterns, often pointing to magnetic north. Local people call those spheres ‘Las Bolas’ and they can be found in many parts of Costa Rica. Research is currently ongoing at the " Farm 6 " site under the direction of archaeologists at the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica. The first field season in which archaeological excavations were undertaken was in 2005 . Objectives during this field season included defining the area in which two mounds were located, sphere alignments, and various excavations associated with mound 2. In 2007 ,

Kellie's Castle Mysterious Place

Image
Kellie’s Castle was meant to be a home away from home for Scottish planter , William Kellie Smith in the 20 th century . Being far away from home, Kellie desired his new residence to reminiscent of his home back in Scotland . The castle is perched on top of a hill in what used to be a rubber estate. William Kellie Smith was an interesting man who was popular with his South Indian workers . Kind at heart, he erected a Hindu shrine for his workers on the castle premises. As a token of appreciation, his workers erected a statue of Kellie complete with a white suit and hat . Construction of this unique castle began in 1915 . However, it came to an abrupt halt with Kellie’s sudden death in 1926 . The solitary castle, looks almost surreal in these wild plantations of Perak, it projects a strong personality and an aura of mystery. Recently , efforts have been made by the Perak State . Government to rescue this magnificent structure from the encroaching foliage . Besides being hau

Iron Pillar

Image
Iron Pillar :   An ancient iron pillar in Delhi which seems to be rust proof. The Iron pillar located in Delhi, India , is a 7 m (23 ft) column in the Qutab complex, notable for the rust-resistant composition of the metals used in its construction. The pillar has attracted the attention of archaeologists and metallurgists as it has withstood corrosion for the last 1600 years, despite harsh weather and has been called testament to the skill of ancient Indian blacksmiths because of its high resistance to corrosion. The iron pillar is one of the world’s foremost metallurgical curiosities . The pillar, almost seven meters high and weighing more than six tones, was erected by Chandragupta II Vikramaditya. The pillar bears an inscription which states that it was erected as a flagstaff in honour of the Hindu god, Vishnu , and in the memory of the Gupta King Chandragupta II (375-413). Made up of 98% wrought iron of pure quality, it is 23 feet 8 inches high and has a

Sailing Stones

Image
Sailing stones , sliding rocks , and moving rocks all refer to a geological phenomenon where rocks move in long tracks along a smooth valley floor with human or animal intervention. They have been recorded and studied in a number of places around Racetrack Playa, Death Valley , where the number and length of travel grooves are notable. The force behind their movement is not confirmed and is the subject of research. Some stones make linear turns others make oval turns while others create a way shape on their tracks. No one has ever seen them move and nobody knows the speed they move with. The mysterious sailing stones of Death Valley turn while they are sliding through the flat leveled valley and this leaves different tracks behind them. Some stones move further than others over two to five years.

Guppy Fish

Image
Poecilia Reticulata is scientific name and common name is Guppy . The guppy (also known as the million fish) is a small colorful species of freshwater tropical fish that is found naturally in the rivers and lakes of South America. There are nearly 300 different types of guppy spread throughout Barbados, Brazil, Guyana, Netherlands Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela . The guppy is one of the most popular types of aquarium tropical fish in the world as they are small, colorful and easier to keep than many other species of fish. The guppy generally lives from 3 to 5 years old in captivity and slightly less in the wild. The guppy has been introduced to most other countries mainly as a method of mosquito prevention as the guppy eats the mosquito larva before they are able to fly, therefore slowing down the spread of malaria. The guppy life span is 2 – 4 years and size is 4 cm – 7.5 cm (1.5 inch - 3 inch).

Golden Oriole

Image
The common name is Golden Oriole and the scientific name is Oriolus . The Golden Oriole (also known as the Eurasian Oriole ) , is a small species of Bird found throughout Europe and western Asia. The Golden Oriole's name is thought to have arisen during the 18th century after the classical Latin word meaning gold. Although almost indistinguishable in appearance, some believe that the Golden Orioles found in Europe, are actually a separate sub-species to those found in Asia. They are also known to be the only member of the Oriole family that breeds in the more temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. The male Golden Oriole is an incredibly colored Bird, with striking yellow and jet black plumage, and fully black wings. As with many other Birds, the female of the species is more dull-looking being slightly greener in color. Both however, are hard to spot in the canopy as they are perfectly camouflaged among  the leaves. Golden Orioles tend to be between 20 - 24 cm in he
